Wireless Mining Mesh Solutions
A Benchmark for the Future.
Until recently, production and operations have moved forward in a similar fashion across
most mine sites. But thanks to some forward thinking by Videotronics, and the introduction
of ground breaking technology solutions by Norwich Park Mine & Goonyella Riverside Mine,
many of the obstacles faced by mining operations will become a thing of the past.
During the last 24 months, Videotronics has designed and implemented site specific wireless
mesh solutions which will literally bring the ‘field’ closer to the office. Through the use of
“Tropos” wireless mesh radios installed on everything from towers, plant equipment, service
vehicles, repositionable trailers and office’s, Videotronics has been able to provide an
unprecedented standard of wireless communications both on, and off-site.
Unlike many technologies introduced to a mining environment, most are either not suited to
the unique and arduous condition’s, or end up as a benefit to only one department. This is
just not the case with the Tropos Wireless Mesh. In fact, every facet of mining operation can
and will be affected. Currently, Videotronics has been involved in the design and development
of a wide number of solutions which are already in effect on site.
Wireless Mining Mesh Solutions
Currently, there are a wide variety of differing projects which utilize the
wireless mesh network across various sites. These include:
•Dragline operations and electronics can now be monitored and checked
in real time without first person attendance at the machine.
•Cameras installed on field equipment can help operators and
supervisors navigate the previous difficulties of engorged blind spots.
•GPS based safety systems can relay in real time the physical location of
personnel and equipment which allows for greater and more effective
emergency response techniques.
•Engine management systems are now tied into the network for some
field equipment which will allow for early diagnosis of problems and
reduce overall downtime.
•Complete autonomous programming and remote control of mobile
dozer equipment.
•VoIP telephony solutions are provided for on Draglines to increase
remote communications whilst reducing overall operating costs.
•Third party integration of industry specific solutions for mobile heavy
equipment including Caterpillar & Leica.
•Integration to Safety Update Screens located remotely across site.
As fantastic as this all seems, it is only the beginning of an extensive and
ever expanding wireless infrastructure development initiative driven by the
mining sector. Many more projects and services have been scheduled for
this financial year. Some of these include:
•Field technicians will be able to stay in constant communication with the
office, the internet & field equipment via laptop or PDA.
•Tracking systems will accurately be able to collect data from all remote fill
stations and re-fueling service trucks.
•Drills and dozers will have work schedules and maps downloaded to them
in real time.
Tyre management systems will collate data from large mobile plant
equipment for better planning & production analysis.
Many other sites including Peak Downs, Ensham, Curragh and Blackwater
Mine have begun to embark on their wireless mesh infrastructure, proving
that these systems are not only a vital cost saving benefit to a mines
operation, but are clearly here to stay.
